Moving forward together
Board of Directors
Board duties and responsibilities
The MÁS Board of Directors is made up of volunteer members of our community who, through centering Blackness, work to support the strategic vision and implement the mission and objectives of the organization in collaboration with the different MÁS committees and staff. The members of the Board are vital to the building and maintaining of a collective ecosystem at MAS that has the capacity to sustain the challenging work of equity and sustainability, positive organizational culture, collective structure and staff leadership development.
The power and responsibilities of our board of directors are shared collectively, equitably and intentionally among the members of the board. We are intentional in the distribution of work to guarantee the sustainability of the work of the board of directors and the organization. The board aims to support each other in their positions to maintain unity, sustainability and heart of the work we do and to focus on the community we serve, not on the hierarchy of power. The MÁS Board of Directors makes this possible with a model of shared leadership and collective decision-making that reflects our mission and values.
Board members are actively involved in organizational governance, support for events, committees and so much more! Among other responsibilities, board members:
- Attend monthly Board meetings (by video-conferencing)
- Foster a healthy organizational environment
- Comply with MAS’s legal obligations, code of ethics, bylaws, articles, and policies
- Uphold MAS’s mission, and values in their leadership and conduct
- Participate in MAS programming when possible
- Provide guidance and support to the Executive Director and Staff
- Carry out the fiduciary responsibilities of the board, such as reviewing the organization’s annual financial statements.
- Actively assist the organization in obtaining adequate resources and to enable it to further its mission.
Please note that the Board of Directors positions are voluntary, and members serve without remuneration.
By joining the MÁS Board of Directors, you can have the opportunity to:
- Contribute to the success of the organization
- Make a positive impact on equity, community empowerment, and education
- Serve your community
- Expand your network and meet people with similar interests
Who are we looking for?
We invite the following groups to be part of our Board of Directors and our activities:
- LGBTQIA+: we want to include the voices of our LGBTQIA+ community because we believe in gender fluidity and we want to invite these voices to help us move the collective progress and movement towards equity.
- Afro-Latino Artists: because MÁS believes in art as a modality of healing and a path for advancement towards achieving racial equity.
- Afro and Indigenous: with the intention of reaffirming the cultural and ancestral values of these communities.
- Youth: because we know they are the future
We want to invite the least heard voices within the dominant structures in this country and within the Latin American diaspora. MÁS believes that the answers lie within communities with fewer opportunities and access. MÁS believes that it is important to listen to the perspectives of other groups especially because they bring a new flavor and perspective to conversations.
Being a member of the Movimiento Afrolatino Seattle Board is a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of our Black and Indigenous diaspora and care for the specific needs of our community.
We hope you will agree to join us!
