Home MÁS conversaciones 2021

“MÁS Conversaciones para MÁS Orgullo”. It is a virtual space that was born within the framework of the covid-19 pandemic, in response to national racial tensions in May 2020. The aim was to raise awareness about anti-blackness feelings and provide a space of support and healing for members of our community. Our firm intention is to focus the voices of Afrodescendant and Afro-Indigenous people, and highlight community dialogue and art as a way to reinvent and create space to connect and strengthen the identities that oppressive systems try to erase. In 2021 we carried out two series of three conversations each: First Series Afro Aesthetic Spring 2021(March,April, May):

  • Braiding identity, wisdom and resistance . Panelists : Rayza De La Hoz an Afroguajira and Meyby Ugueto-Ponce Afrovenezolana

  • Aesthetics, body and household work. Panelists: Ingrid Gamboa, Gilda Blanco, two Garífuna women from Guatemala

  • The arts as a path to restoration and liberation.. Panelists: Minox – Minoty Afrovenezolana – dancer and graphic designer / Julian Diaz / DIOKAJU Afrocolombiano – contemporary dance / Black Mama – Afro-Ecuadorian – hip hop / María GuillénPoesía Mariarte – Afro-Mexican – plastic arts / Meyby Ugueto Ponce – Afro-Venezuelan traditional dancer and anthropologist / Iki Yos Peña Afro-Venezuelan artist

Second Series Territories of Freedom: Testimonies from the Afro Diaspora: Fall 20221(October, November, December). We carried out this second series with funding and technical support from PeoplesHub .

#1 In our first conversation we talked about Afro women and the de-racializing processes withEvelyne Laurent-Perrault, uan Afro-Venezuelan / Haitian Afro diaspora historian and Ana Gabriela Cano Ortiz (Black Mama) an Afro-Ecuadorian Hip Hop artist

#2 In the second conversation, we had Meyby Ugueto-Ponce , AfroVenezuelan, Caraqueña, descendants of two peoples of free blacks: La Sabana and Curiepe, and Rayza de La Hoz , froguajira promoter of Afro aesthetics and the empowerment of Afro-descendant women, along with two special guests Keila Miranda: Granddaughter of palenqueros and palenqueras, heir to the territory and language of Benkos Biohó Palenque. Female voice of the group Kombilesa Mi. AND Zaida del Carmen Poncefrom Caracas, a descendant of Curiepera They shared with us about Curiepe in Venezuela and Palenque de Benkos Biohó in Colombia, two communities that achieved their freedom using different strategies. On the one hand, the negotiation with the colonial system and on the other the rupture through the flight of the slave regime.

#3 For the last conversation we had as a special guestGemaly Padua Uscanga , traditional musician, Fandango Dancer, an Afro-descendant who shared with us where she is in her process of re-deconstruction, self-recognition and the work she does with the ALTEPEE collective. She also shared with us about the tradition of the Fandango and the power of the Fiestas as a form of socio-political organization, as a space to meet others and with herself. Traditional festivals like Territories of freedom.

“MÁS Conversaciones para MÁS Orgullo” has been a space of much learning and healing both for those who organize it and for all the participants. And for that reason we want to continue working to establish it as a permanent program of the organization. So we continue to organize ourselves to bring two new series of conversations for 2022.

A deep thanks to the “comadres” who braid their voices every week to build this much-needed space: Haydee Lavariega, Teresita Bazan, Delia Pinto

Sandra Huber, Minox Minoty, Meyby PonceUgueto, Rayza De La Hoz.
