Oral traditions that heal

It is a virtual community event to celebrate our oral traditions as a tool for healing and promotion. In this event we seek to merge art and health promotion, while centering the voices of artists as the axis to share messages about the importance of vaccination and to raise awareness and educate the Afro-Latino community about our traditions.

Artists from Venezuela, Panama, Mexico and Puerto Rico, participated sharing verses and tenths from their oral traditions, as well included an interactive mini-workshop, where participants practiced collective creation with the guidance of an artist (in rooms for small groups) of verses, quatrains, couplets, seguidillas, related to COVID19, Mental Health and the Importance of Vaccines.

To continue we created Más versadas Sessions. A campaign that involved the virtual community of MÁS to listen to the participant’s décimas and interact with them creating new videos.

Saturday November 20, 2021

1- The event will have three parts, in the first part we will enjoy original verses from different Afro-Latinx artists.

2- In the second part of the event, the artists will enter virtual meeting rooms on Zoom and guide a group of participants through the practice of creating verses or quatrains. The theme of the verses is related to COVID-19, mental health or the importance of vaccinations and the protection of the AfroLatinx community. Each working group will have the opportunity to share them with the general audience, when they return to the main hall to make a collective closing.

3- After this breakout session ends, attendees will have the option to speak with licensed mental health professionals and community navigators to help obtain information and resources related to mental wellness and COVID-19.

Artists

Lic. in Arts Mention Cinema, with a doctorate in Arts and cultures of the South from the University of the Arts with his research: A solo from Boca. Since 1991 he has been part of the Venezuelan Traditional Popular Dance and Music group La Trapatiesta UCV as a dancer , musician and researcher.

Degree in Education with a Postgraduate Degree in Cultural Development, teacher, musician and cultist. Patrimonial bearer of the cult around Saint John the Baptist. Promoter, diffuser and defender of the traditional manifestations of Venezuela. Director of the Escuela de Niños Decimistas de Caracas, educational project of the traditional manifestations linked to improvised verse and the tenth.

Composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer, Chávez’s group repertoire includes bolero, corridor, cueca, joropo, cumbia, son, guajira, Andean music, merengue and calypso, as well as popular ballads. Educator and cultural ambassador, Chávez was previously Folk Troubadour and Professor at the National University of Panama.

The Marín sisters started singing from childhood.

María del Milagro She is known as “La Defensora del Verso”, professional troubadour of the Décima Cantada in Panama.
María del Carmen Her artistic nickname is “the singing princess”. He has participated in the Manuel F Zárate contest, Environmental Décimas, troubadour tour and in troubadour challenges.

He is a renowned composer, performer, teacher and scholar who specializes in the son jarocho and the traditional zapateado of the fandango dance. In 2004 he published “El canto de la memoria”, a historical investigation of the last 50 years of music from the southern region of Veracruz, a project financed by the National Center for Art and Culture of Mexico (FONCA).

Born in Mexico, she lives in the Yakima Valley. She is a historian and professor of history at Heritage University. His work focuses on the intertwined stories of immigrants and Native Americans in a racialized agricultural landscape. Her art and scholarship are fueled by her role as a mother and the belief that belonging is more than a basic human need.

Born in Mexico City, he is a Vocalist, string instrumentalist of various forms of folk guitars such as Quinta Huapanguera, Jaranas, Cuatro Venezolano and Arpa among other instruments native to Mexico and other South American countries. He is the founder of Correo Aéreo in 1992 and since 2001 he chose Seattle as a place to live, he has been part of different artistic groups and cultural projects.

He is a Puerto Rican poet and composer born in the Bronx, who has been presenting his poems and songs since 1990. For 16 years he was the co-leader of the Welfare Poets, writing rap lyrics, Puerto Rican bomb sounds and Puerto Rican plenas. After moving to Chicago in 2006, he has enriched the Puerto Rican bomba genre with dozens of new songs in different rhythms.
