The Seattle Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) is now accepting online applications for the Seattle COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund for Immigrants .
This program offers a one-time payment of $1,000 to each adult immigrant applicant and up to $3,000 for families with children. Applicants must live or attend school or work within the Seattle city limits . And you must also be low-income and not have been eligible for the federal CARES Act Economic Impact Payments (also known as a “coronavirus stimulus check”).
The review process is NOT on a first-come, first-served basis . To support those who need it most, the program prioritizes applicants based on a set of vulnerability criteria. However, OIRA encourages residents to apply as soon as possible. The application period is open for three weeks, from Thursday, October 15, 2020 to November 5, 2020 at 11:59 p.m.
You can access more information about the COVID-19 Relief Fund, including information translated into Amharic, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog/Filipino, and Vietnamese) here. You can also find the app translated into those same seven languages here: seattlecovidfund.org .
If you need help with the application, there are 20 organizations available to help applicants by phone in 41 languages. You can find their contact information here.
If you would like to help ensure that qualified immigrants can access this program, please help us share our translated images from social media with members of the community. You can find outreach materials here: welcome.seattle.gov/seattlecovidfund .
The non-profit organization Scholarship Junkies (SJ) will administer the online application process. They already have significant experience helping manage the logistics of the grassroots COVID-19 Relief Fund for undocumented people in Washington state in partnership with the undocumented youth-led Washington Dream Coalition .
This funding is part of a joint $45 million COVID-19 relief package announced by Mayor Jenny A. Durkan , Council Speaker M. Lorena González, Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, and Councilmember Tammy Morales in August of this year. From this package, the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) received $9 million in new funds from the City’s general fund. Researchers estimate Seattle’s affected immigrant population to be around 150,000 people , including children.
