On the one hand, the negotiation with the colonial system and on the other the rupture through the flight of the slave regime.

Curiepe, a town founded by free blacks, achieved their freedom in the eighteenth century through the strategic use of colonial laws, to consolidate a territory based on legality and the awareness of being descendants of Africans. El Palenque de San Basilio, for its part, conquered freedom from flight, from marooning, very early in the process of conquest, since its inhabitants opted for breaking with the Monarchy. These two experiences show us two different ways of managing freedom, which manifest the wealth of political and intellectual perspectives of the African diaspora and also show the heterogeneity of the processes of resistance and knowledge of the Afro diaspora.

Panelists

Meyby Ugueto-PonceAfro-Venezuelan

Caracas, descendant of free black towns: Curiepe and La Sabana.
