1st Edition. Pilot cohort<\/h2>\n

This program, which is still in its diapers, arose from the initiative of one of the young participants of this pilot Pedro Martinez<\/a>, who needed hours of volunteering for his school and wanted to explore one of the things he likes to do the most, which is photography. So between conversations with him came the idea of \u200b\u200binterviewing and taking photos with some of the artists in the community as a way to fulfill their volunteer hours for the organization and at the same time connect and learn about Afro-Latin art.<\/span><\/p>\n

In June 2020 we published the first interview<\/a> that Pedro did with the teacher Silvio Dos Reis<\/a>, where the construction path of this space began. Together with Delia Pinto<\/a> we began to dream about how to shape this program and in October 2020 with the collaboration and wisdom of Christopher German we began to work and design a curriculum for the program and to write a scholarship for the financial support of this initiative. Afro-Colombian writer Jacob Taylor-Mosquera also joined us in this effort, as a volunteer to offer support in classes on how to write about your identity and how to do an interview. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ricardo is Artistic Director of Hagucha Garinagu, a performance group that offers presentations with music and dance of the Garifuna culture.<\/span>[\/vc_hoverbox][vc_hoverbox image=”2702″ primary_title=”” hover_title=”Blanca Prater” el_width=”70″]Artist from Panama, she promotes, celebrates & cultivates Panamanian traditions & customs in the Pacific Northwest.<\/span>[\/vc_hoverbox][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_hoverbox image=”2874″ primary_title=”” hover_title=”Dora Oliviera” css=”.vc_custom_1640825388655{margin-top: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 10px !important;border-top-width: 20px !important;border-bottom-width: 20px !important;}”]A native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Dance with Dora\u2019s founder and creative director, Dora Oliveira, is a master of her craft who has been choreographing, performing, and teaching Afro-Brazilian dance and music to adults and kids for over 30 years. <\/span>[\/vc_hoverbox][vc_hoverbox image=”2704″ primary_title=”” hover_title=”Mark Lilly” css=”.vc_custom_1640385882420{margin-top: 10px !important;border-top-width: 20px !important;}”](aka Ifeoluwa) creates original songs and lyrics highlighting the similar use of silent space that graces beautiful Jazz ballads as well as the melodic invocations of the Yoruba Orisha. She has collaborated as choreographer, cultural consultant, guest artist, music and dance instructor with various college and community education youth and adult programs throughout the Pacific Northwest. And today we are here to celebrate the culmination of this first pilot, and my heart is filled with love and pride for each of the 6 youths who participated in the program. Each of them taught me different things, I learned that my face is a collage of my ancestors, that it is important to laugh more often and not take ourselves so seriously, that there is no age limit to connect with ideas and deep thoughts, that listening is a fundamental exercise to be able to connect. <\/span><\/p>\n
